DESCRIPTION:
APW - Illinois, Grade 189 marked "189 Special," 21J, 16S, gold-filled OF recase, "A.N. Anderson, Minneapolis" marked white enamel DS Gothic numeral dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, three finger bridge Getty model mvt, bright spotted pattern nickel damascene, s#1627705. The "189 Special" marking is extremely rare among Illinois Grade 189 production; this is the only open face example we have encountered, and we have only seen two of the hunting case examples.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Ticking sluggishly, overhaul recommended, excellent-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, some scattered small fine to micro-fine scratches, some small bits of oxide to winding wheel and regulator spring, portion of regulator with fine scratch striations from sanding; dial with light hl above seconds-register, light outer chapter hl at 1, few scattered fine scratches and tiny surface nicks, few small edge flakes under bezel; excellent hands with some areas of finish loss; case shows ample wear, some dings and shallow dents to rear, scattered dings to band, majority of band is worn through to brass, pendant with sizable areas of wear to brass, bezel and perimeter of rear with areas of wear to brass; tight brassy bow, crown shows substantial wear; plastic crystal with scattered fine scratches.
